ALIEN Narcissus model picture
This is the HALCYON Narcissus model from HALCYON. Injection molded from polystyrene. it is easy to make. I painted with matt enamels. For the picture I used a black photographic drape, and under-exposed 2 stops. this made the background black. so I added a few stars in GIMP. It looks very good I think, since the picture was done with little effort. Model is brush painted matt light blue-grey. To use matt paint, I clean the model with white-spirit, then detergent, and allow to dry. THe enamel paint is mixed with an electric mixer, and tested on a spare plastic part to ensure it is going to end up matt. On this model, the panel lines are recessed on the model, and give the appearance of different shades, though the model is actually one color. Kit transfers were added and painted with matt clear.

model
The Discovery command module and centrifuge section from the movei: '2001 A Space Odessy' (Dir: Kubrick. MGM ). A later Luna Models vinyl and resin model. The model was painted in matt enamels.
There are now huge models, 12ft long from Captain Cardboard, being sold to order at a modest $5,000 fully assembled and painted. Nothing smaller on the market. so I am keeping this one as Luna Models do not seem to be trading in 2012. (Model Currently undergoing restoration)
Discovery full model picture
Discovery full model picture The Luna Models Discovery model fully assembled (minus one modue at the front, that got flushed down the sink when cleaning). Model was made about 1994 while I was living in the USA. Thewre were various versions of the Discovery sold by LM. this is the last version, with the vinyl engine block, (earler version had a resin engine block). I thin it is the most accurate LM Discovery. I think this Luna Models version is better than the current Discovery being sold by COMET models.
The kit suffered somewhat from being stored and moved around. (Under restoration). Engine secion and command module are vinyl. All the othere parts are resin, with the spin being resin-moulded around a metal pole. The spine suffers from poor moulding, cracking and air-holes. The vinyl engine section is one piece with a metal tube which the modelerdrill holes for, and aligns for the spine to fit. Model came without a stand. The spine modules are difficult to get exactly lined up, so on the restoration, I will make a jig to fix them in place when they are glued to the spine. Resin antenae dishes are acceptable. Model comes with a singe pod bay door that can be opened, and a single space pod. I glued the dor in place befor gluing the module together. The kit vinyl mouldings are very good quality. Model photographed with a black drape behind.
Luna Models space pod from 2001. Made entrely of resin parts. sphere is two solid halves, The shape is quite close to the original and makes an acceptable model. Assembled wuth suerglue and painted with white and black enamels. The vision aperture is pained gloss black. Resin waldoes really need replacing with sprue. Picture was staged with Luna Models Discovery.

STAR WARS Imperial shuttle. Injection moulded polystyrene. A current relase by AIRFIX. but may be hard to find. Model is very easy to malke and did not need any filling, was assembled as per instructions. Pained in matt enamels. The model was made with photography in mind: the crew cockpit was painted matt black, canopy has black-painted edges to reduce interenal reflections. Hand painted with Humbrol enamels. Not weathered. No transfers or details. Photographed with 2-stop underexposure at F8. which hides black drapes.

Lost in space model JUPITER II by Polar Lights

Polar Lights model of JUPITER II flying saucer from the Irwin Allen 1960's Televison production 'Lost in Space' . Injection moulded polystyrene model kit was chrome plated (plain, unpainte kit was not avalible) I assembled without painting or filler. Chrome plating was scraped away from areas that were glued together. don't know why Polar Lights did the 'Chrome plated limited edition' in Chrome Plate, as the 'real' ship was silver, so that a correctly painted ship interior would cover all the chrome with the 'correct' colors (Eng: colours). Suprisingly, it looks quite convincing when photographed 2 stop underexposed. My workroom can be seen in the reflections. The interior was left 'chrome plate' and seems to look quite good, though the instruments, etc. could do with picking out in colours.
